A Chandra Observation of the Circinus Galaxy
نویسنده
چکیده
We report on a recent Chandra ACIS-S observation of the Circinus galaxy. These observations confirm that the nuclear spectrum results from reflection of a hard X-ray continuum by “neutral” matter. The nuclear X-ray emission is extended by ∼ 60 pc in the general direction of the optical “ionization cone”. An image in the Fe Kα line has been made and shows that this emission extends up to 200 pc from the nucleus. There is also large-scale X-ray emission both along and perpendicular to the galaxy disk. Thermal plasma models for this extended gas indicate temperatures kT ∼ 0.6 keV, though cooler photoionized gas is also possible. The X-ray emission from gas in the disk is probably associated with the starburst ring of radius 150–250 pc. The gas extending ∼ 600 pc perpendicular to the disk is closely correlated with the highexcitation optical-line emission. In addition to its soft X-ray emission, we tentatively detect a hard component from the gas above the plane; this hard emission may represent nuclear X-rays scattered into our line of sight by electrons in the outflowing wind. Ten compact sources are found in the central kpc of the galaxy. The most luminous has an X-ray luminosity of ≃ 10 erg s and seems to be an X-ray binary in the Circinus galaxy with a black-hole mass exceeding 80M⊙. Flux and spectral variations in the Circinus Galaxy
We report on a dramatic flux (∼ 50% increase in the LECS and MECS band) and spectral variation between two BeppoSAX observations of the Circinus Galaxy performed almost three years apart. Through the analysis of all Chandra observations available in the archive, including a new DDT observation on May 2001, we show that a high flux state of an extremely variable Ultra Luminous X-ray source (CG X...
متن کاملA Chandra Study of the Circinus Galaxy Point-source Population
We have used the Chandra X-ray Observatory to resolve spatially and spectrally the X-ray emission from the Circinus Galaxy. We report here on the nature of the X-ray emission from the off-nuclear point sources associated with the disk of Circinus, which make up ≈ 34% of the total 0.5–10 keV emission. We find that many of the serendipitous X-ray sources are concentrated along the optical disk of...
متن کاملX-RAY IMAGING OF THE SEYFERT 2 GALAXY CIRCINUS WITH Chandra
We present results from the zeroth-order imaging of a Chandra HETGS observation of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy Circinus. Twelve X-ray sources were detected in the ACIS-S image of the galaxy, embedded in diffuse X-ray emission. The latter shows a prominent (∼ 18) soft “plume” in the N-W direction, coincident with the [O III] ionization cone. The radial profiles of the brightest X-ray source at v...
متن کاملHIGH-RESOLUTION X-RAY SPECTROSCOPY OF THE SEYFERT 2 GALAXY CIRCINUS WITH Chandra
Results from a 60 ks Chandra HETGS observation of the nearby Seyfert 2 Circinus are presented. The spectrum shows a wealth of emission lines at both soft and hard X-rays, including lines of Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe, and a prominent Fe Kα line at 6.4 keV. We identify several of the He-like components and measure several of the Lyman lines of the H-like ions. The lines’ profiles are unresolv...
متن کاملOn the Nature of the Bright Short-Period X-ray Source in the Circinus Galaxy Field
The spectrum and light curve of the bright X-ray source CG X-1 in the field of the Circinus galaxy are re-examined. Previous analyses have concluded that the source is an accreting black hole of mass > ∼ 50 M although it was noted that the light curve resembles that of an AM Her system. Here we show that the short period and an assumed main sequence companion constrain the mass of the companion...
